Education Statistics Liaison Group (ESLG) Meeting

Location: Central Statistics Office, Ardee Road/Microsoft Teams

Attendance:

30 people attended the 3rd ESLG meeting in the CSO Rathmines office and remotely via Microsoft Teams, representing 9 Public Services Bodies. A full list of those in attendance can be found at the end of this document. 

Agenda 

Item 1: Welcome and Update - Paul Morrin (CSO), Tomás O’Ruairc (DoE), Trudy Duffy (DFHERIS)

  • Paul Morrin (CSO), Tomás O’Ruairc (DoE) and Trudy Duffy (DFHERIS) provided an update on statistical work ongoing in their departments.

Item 2: Teaching Council Register – Signs of Life Analysis – Olwyn Byrne (DoE)

  • Provided an overview of the Teaching Council Register.
  • Presented preliminary findings on the number of teachers on the register who are currently teaching and who are not teaching.
  • Presented preliminary findings on where teachers were working, if they were not employed as teachers, using administrative data. 

Item 3: Early School Leavers and School Completers – James O’Brien (DoE)

  • Provided an overview of research undertaken using the Educational Longitudinal Database in the CSO.
  • Presented a comparison of outcomes for early school leavers and school completers in terms of employment, education, welfare and not captured on administrative records.
  • Presented outcomes across various characteristics including gender, nationality and school type. 

Item 4: Health Graduate Outcomes – Brian Stanley (CSO)

  • Provided an overview of work undertaken to measure the recruitment and retention of healthcare graduates in Ireland.
  • Presented findings on how many graduates emigrated and how many returned,
  • Presented findings on when nursing and medicine graduates first emigrate and how long they emigrate for.

Item 5: Growing Up in Ireland – Gillian Roche (CSO)

  • Provided an overview of the Growing Up in Ireland survey.
  • Provided most recent findings from Cohort 08 when they were 13 and Cohort 98 when they were 20.
  • Discussed the role of administrative data and future data plans.

Item 6: AOB / Open Discussion

  • Kevin Healy (CSO) provided an update on the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) survey. The data collection is completed, and a favourable response rate was achieved. The data is currently being weighted before submission to the OECD.
  • Deirdre Lynch provided an update on the Census 2022 education profile which will be published on December 19th.

Action items:

  1. Circulate presentation slides from meeting to all ESLG members
  2. Organise next ESLG meeting
  3. Ask for volunteers to present at the next meeting
