The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 may have had an impact on some of the figures in this release.
Domestic Material Consumption (see Editor's Note below for a definition) was 109 million tonnes in 2020 which was down 7% on 2019 (See Table 1).
Domestic Extraction was 87 million tonnes in 2020.
The principal component of domestic extraction in 2020 was Non-Metallic Minerals at 50 million tonnes. This mainly comprised Crushed Rock (27 million tonnes) and Sand & Gravel (18 million tonnes).
The domestic extraction of Biomass accounted for 32 million tonnes in 2020 with Grazed Biomass accounting for 20 million tonnes or 63% (See Table 2).
The domestic extraction of Fossil Fuels was 2.2 million tonnes in 2020. Natural gas extraction was 1.5 million tonnes while peat was 0.7 million tonnes (See Table 2).
Domestic Extraction measures flows of raw materials from the natural environment into the economy. These materials comprise biomass, metallic minerals, non-metallic minerals, and fossil fuels.
Domestic Material Consumption measures the total amount of material used within a national economy. It is the sum of domestic extraction plus imports less exports.

Statistician's Comment
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (07 July 2023) published Material Flow Accounts 2020.
Commenting on the release Reamonn McKeever, Statistician in the Environment and Climate Division of the Central Statistics Office, said: “Domestic Material Consumption was estimated at 109 million tonnes in 2020. This was 8 million tonnes or 7% lower than in 2019. The lowest figure for Domestic Material Consumption in the 1994-2020 time series was 86 million tonnes in 2011. The highest figure in the time series was 177 million tonnes in 2007.
Domestic Extraction fell from 94 million tonnes in 2019 to 87 million tonnes in 2020. This reduction was caused by decreases in the domestic extraction of Non-Metallic Minerals and Fossil Fuels. The domestic extraction of Non-Metallic Minerals fell by 5 million tonnes or 10% between 2019 and 2020. The domestic extraction of Fossil Fuels decreased by 2 million tonnes or 48% over this period.
Trade goods imports were 41 million tonnes in 2020 compared with exports of 19 million tonnes. Raw products accounted for 41% of imports and 13% of exports in 2020 (See Table 3).
Finished goods made up 43% of trade imports and 47% of trade exports.
Net Material Accumulation fell from 56 million tonnes in 2019 to 49 million tonnes in 2020 (See Table 1)."
