Information Note - Wholesale Price Index Revision September 2023

The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) for September 2023 was published on 20 October 2023. An error in the application of currency exchange rates for the WPI was recently discovered where August 2023 exchange rates were applied to the export manufacturing data instead of exchange rates for September 2023.

As of 23 November 2023, all the necessary corrections have been made to September 2023 data on export sales. The analysis and outputs of the WPI data for September 2023 including all of the relevant tables, graphs, and text of the September 2023 WPI release have been updated to reflect these corrections. The following PxStat tables were also updated: WPM24 and WPM25. Users should note that the data in Tables 3, 4, and 5 of the WPI release were not impacted.

The error resulted in an under-estimation of the WPI for September 2023. The overall producer price index for manufacturing for September 2023 was 86.1 when it should have been 87.0.

For more details on the impact of the correction please see Tables 1, 2, and 2a below which show the values from the WPI release originally published on 20 October 2023 with the revised estimates published today, 23 November 2023.
