This section refers to projected population estimates of persons aged 18 years and under. The Census 2022 ‘usually resident’ population (5,183,966 persons) provides the base for the population projections.
The data presented below shows three different population projection variants to help in assessing the impact of different levels of population change. These national population projections provide statistics on potential future population levels and are not an attempt to predict the future but rather presents how the population could evolve under different scenarios. For the purpose of the Children and Young Person's hub, the three net migration scenario estimates have been selected (Method 1, 2 and 3). These estimates are calculated as follows:
Method 1 - high migration: Net migration starting at +75,000 in 2022 and decreasing incrementally to +45,000 per annum by 2027 and remaining at this level to 2057.
Method 2 - moderate migration: Net migration starting at +75,000 in 2022 and decreasing incrementally to +30,000 per annum by 2032 and remaining at this level to 2057.
Method 3 - low migration: Net migration starting at +75,000 in 2022 and decreasing incrementally to +10,000 per annum by 2032 and remaining at this level to 2057.
Net migration refers to the net effect of immigration and emigration. A positive entry denotes that inward migration exceeds outward migration and vice-versa.
