Age of Purchasers

Almost 63% of residential dwellings were purchased with a mortgage in 2021

Median age of purchasers with a mortgage was 37 in 2021

The median age of purchasers was 39 in 2021. Buyers with a mortgage had a median age of 37 compared to 47 for those without a mortgage.

 In 2016, the median age of those purchasing a property with and without a mortgage was 36 and 52, respectively. See Figure 2.1 for further information.

Kildare and Meath had the youngest purchasers with a mortgage in 2021 at 35

Both Kildare and South Dublin had the lowest median age of purchasers without a mortgage in 2021 at 40 years. Wexford was the region with the highest median age of buyers without a mortgage at 55 years. 

South Dublin had the smallest difference between the median age of purchasers with and without a mortgage at 4 years (36 for mortgage purchasers vs 40 for non-mortgage purchasers). This difference was largest in Wexford at 16 (39 for mortgage purchasers vs 55 for non-mortgage purchasers). See Map 2.1 and 2.2.
