Almost 6% of enterprises in the population appear closed

Of enterprises in the population that were trading in 2019, 5,763 (5.8%) were showing no signs of life at the end of 2021. The highest proportion of enterprises that appear closed were in the Real estate activities sector (10.3%) and the Accommodation and food service activities sector (9.4%). This was followed by Transportation and storage (7.1%), Other services activities, which includes gyms and hairdressers (6.3%) and Arts, entertainment and recreation (6.2%). The Industrial sector had the smallest proportion of enterprises which appeared closed at 3.5%. See Figure 2.1 and Tables 2.1 & 2.2.

One in ten enterprises trading pre-COVID-19 were at risk of closing at the end of 2021

Enterprises in the ‘At Risk of Closing’ category have not officially ceased but have very limited signs of life, for example, there was no evidence within administrative data sources of any employees remaining on the payroll, but there may have been other limited signs of life such as some associated persons claiming state support or some trading activity.

More than one in ten (10.4%) enterprises trading pre-COVID-19 were at risk of closing at the end of 2021. The Other services activities sector, which includes gyms and hairdressers, had the highest proportion of enterprises which showed signs of being at risk of closing at 18.4%. This was followed by Construction (14.5%) and Accommodation and food service activities (13.9%).  Restrictions during the pandemic had a significant impact on all these sectors. The sectors with the smallest proportions of enterprises at risk of closing were Information and communication (6.2%) and Industry (6.6%). See Figure 2.1 and Tables 2.1 & 2.2.

More than three quarters of enterprises trading in each sector in 2019 had survived by the end of 2021

More than three quarters of enterprises trading normally in each sector in 2019 had survived by the end of 2021. The sectors with the smallest proportion of surviving enterprises by the end of 2021 were Other services activities (75.3%) and Accommodation and food service activities (76.7%). The sectors with the highest proportion of businesses surviving the pandemic were Industry (89.8%) and Information and communication (88.4%). These sectors were closely followed by Professional, scientific and technical activities (87.6%) and Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (87.3%). Just one in 45 persons engaged pre-COVID-19 associated with an enterprise that appears closed at the end of 2021

In this report we analyse the 2019 enterprise population that had two or more persons engaged. This population accounted for 1.5 million persons in 2019. Of these persons, 2.2% were associated with enterprises that appeared to be closed at the end of 2021. The Real estate activities sector (4.8%) and the Other services activities sector (3.9%) each had the highest proportion of persons engaged in enterprises in 2019 that appear closed at the end of 2021. These were followed by Accommodation and food service activities with 3.6%. Just 0.8% of persons engaged in Industry in 2019 were associated with enterprises that now appear closed. See Figure 2.2 and Tables 2.3 & 2.4.

Enterprises at risk of closing at the end of 2021 had over 52,000 persons previously engaged in 2019

Enterprises at risk of closing at the end of 2021 had 52,532 persons engaged pre-COVID-19. This represents 3.5% of the 1.5 million persons engaged in the population in 2019. The Other services activities sector (11.2%) and the Arts, entertainment and recreation sector (9.2%) had the highest proportion of 2019 jobs in enterprises at risk of closing at the end of 2021. Only two other sectors had more than 5% of 2019 jobs in enterprises at risk of closing, Construction (6.7%) and Accommodation and food services activities (5.4%). See Figure 2.2 and Tables 2.3 & 2.4.

In all but two sectors over 90% of 2019 jobs were in enterprises that survived

Most sectors had over 90% of 2019 jobs in enterprises that survived by the end of 2021. The Industrial sector had the highest proportion of 2019 jobs (98.2%) in enterprises that survived the pandemic. The two sectors that had less than 90% of 2019 jobs in enterprises that survived by the end of 2021 were Arts, entertainment and recreation (88.1%) and Other services activities (84.9%). See Figure 2.2 and Tables 2.3 & 2.4.
