Statistician's Comment
Commenting on the release, Jillian Delaney, Statistician in the Prices Division, said: ''Wholesale price inflation continued to show signs of levelling off in May 2023 with no change to the overall producer price index for the manufacturing industries in the month. The price index for export sales rose by 0.1% since April 2023, while the index for home sales fell by 0.9% in the month. Producer prices for products sold on the domestic market are now 5.3% higher than they were in May 2022, with export producer prices falling by 1.4% and overall producer prices falling by 1.1% in the year.
Producer prices in the Food Products index dropped by 0.7% in the month and this overall index was 2.4% lower than in May 2022. Prices for some food products fell in the month, for example Dairy Products (-7.3%) and Vegetable & Animal Oils & Fats (-5.1%). Prices for these products were also lower compared to May 2022, with Dairy Products seeing a reduction of 8.8% in the year and Vegetable & Animal Oils & Fats down by 9.3%. Several other food categories were still significantly higher in May 2023 compared with the same month in 2022, including Fruit & Vegetables (+17.4%), Fish & Fish Products (+13.9%) and Grain Milling, Starches & Animal Feeds (+3.9%), (See Table 2).
Wholesale electricity prices decreased by 16.2% in the month to May 2023 and were 26.6% lower than in May 2022. The changes in electricity prices over the last two years can be seen in Figure 3 (See also Table 5).
The All Materials Index for construction products decreased by 0.8% in the month but increased by 9.1% in the year, while the Building and Construction (i.e. Materials and Wages) index fell by 0.4% in the month but was 6.3% higher than the same month last year (See Tables 3 and 4).''
