Statistician's Comment

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (17 January 2024) published Vehicles licensed for the first time for December and Year 2023.

Commenting on the data, Nele van der Wielen, Statistician in the Transport Section of the CSO, said: “Today’s figures from the CSO show the continued growth in the number of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles licensed in Ireland. The number of new electric cars licensed has increased by 45% from 15,462 in 2022 to 22,493 in 2023. At the same time, the number of new diesel cars is decreasing. In 2023, 25,938 new cars licensed were diesel cars compared with 27,185 in 2022. The number of new petrol cars licensed in 2023 rose by 27% (38,746 versus 30,627).

Used Private Cars

There were 50,381 used private cars licensed in 2023 compared with 46,567 in 2022.

The total number of used vehicles licensed in 2023 was up by 8% compared with 2022 (See Table 1).

Most Popular Car Brands

Data also shows that Toyota (15,318) was the most popular make of new private car licensed in 2023, followed by Volkswagen (13,359), Hyundai (11,022), Skoda (9,453), and Kia (8,490). Together, these five makes represent half (50%) of all new private cars licensed in 2023 (See Table 4).

Of the new electric cars licensed in 2023, the top make and model was Volkswagen ID.4 (2,887), followed by Tesla Model Y (2,119), Hyundai Ioniq (1,227), and Tesla Model 3 (1,203)."

Editor's Note

Registration and licensing figures may differ in a given month for a number of reasons, some of which are outlined below:

  • Vehicles registered in the latter part of a particular month may not be licensed until a later month because of the time lapse between registration and first licensing.
  • In some cases, a vehicle may be registered by a dealership in advance of a sale.
  • Registered vehicles which are not used in a public place (e.g. tractors for use exclusively on the land) may not need to be licensed.
