This publication has been compiled during the COVID-19 crisis. The results contained in this publication reflect some of the economic impacts of the COVID-19 situation.

Driver and vehicle testing

A total of 3,089,212 Irish driving licences were held at the end of 2020, of which less than ten percent (8.3%) were learner permit licences.
There were 87,580 driving tests conducted in 2020 with an average pass rate of 55.0%.
Compared with 2019, the number of driving tests conducted in 2020 decreased by 53.0%.
Over one million (1,006,983) cars underwent the National Car Test (NCT) in 2020. More than four out of every ten (43.7%) of those cars failed the initial test, but 92.3% passed after one or more tests.
