In 1993, 28% of Ireland’s total exports were to the UK, at a value of €7.1 billion. By 2018, exports to the UK had fallen to 11% of total exports. Over the same time period, the proportion of our exports to the USA has increased from 9% to 28%, representing a value in 2018 of €39 billion.

Ireland’s imports from the UK in 1993 were almost €6.8 billion, representing 36% of total imports. By 2018, the value of imports from the UK had increased to €20 billion, but the proportion of total imports coming from the UK fell to 22%.

Imports from the rest of the EU increased in proportion from 26% to 37% between 1993 and 2018. In value terms, this was an increase from €4.5 billion to €34.5 billion.
