In September 2023, the number of new private cars licensed fell by 433 vehicles (9%) when compared with September 2022.
The number of bus journeys in Dublin continued to exceed pre-pandemic figures, with an increase of 10% when compared with the same week in 2019.
The number of bus journeys outside of Dublin for week 39 of 2023 (week beginning 25 September 2023) exceeded 2019 figures by 17%.
At 325 million litres, clearances of autodiesel in August 2023, were 7.3% higher than in August 2022.
At 97 million litres, clearances of petrol in August 2023, were 19% higher than in August 2022.
There were nine fatalities on Irish roads in September 2023 compared with 10 in September 2022 and 11 in September 2021.

Statistician's Comment
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (18 October 2023) published its latest Transport Bulletin for September 2023. This bulletin captures changing traffic volumes and the number of journeys taken on public transport. This bulletin is compiled using data collected by Transport Infrastructure Ireland, the Road Safety Authority, the National Transport Authority, Dublin City Council, the Office of the Revenue Commissioners, and the Department of Transport.
Commenting on this latest bulletin, Dr Nele van der Wielen, Statistician in the Transport Division, said: “The number of bus journeys in Dublin for week 39 of 2023 (week beginning 25 September 2023) was 10% higher when compared with the number of journeys in the same week in 2019. Comparing the same week with 2022, there was a 14% increase in the number of bus journeys in Dublin.
The number of bus journeys outside of Dublin for week 39 of 2023 exceeded 2019 figures by 17% and was up by 7% when compared with the same week in 2022.
Vehicles Licensed
There were 6,882 new private cars and 4,232 used (imported) private cars licensed in September 2023. Compared with September 2022, there was a decrease of 9% for new private cars and a decline of 3% for used private cars.
Road Fatalities
There were nine fatalities on Irish roads in September 2023 compared with 10 in September 2022 and 11 in September 2021."
