Key findings

  • Car traffic volumes increased considerably in the week beginning 12 April (week 15) compared with the previous week, following the easing of the 5 km travel restrictions. From week 14 to week 15 car traffic volumes increased by 25.5% in Dublin and by 21.2% in the selected regional sites.
  • The latest data available shows HGV traffic volumes are 69.9% higher in Dublin and 48.6% higher in regional sites compared to the same week in 2020.
  • There were 40 fatalities on Irish roads in the first four month of 2021 compared with 53 in the same period in 2020, a drop of 24.5%. However, in April 2021 there were 19 fatalities on Irish roads compared with 7 in April 2020.
  • In March 2021 clearance volumes of petrol were the lowest for the month in the 2000-2021 time period.
  • Latest available data on the total number of rail and bus journeys indicates that they are now at their highest level since the beginning of 2021.
  • The volume of cyclists during off-peak for April 2021 were 111.1% higher than April 2020 and 26.3% higher than in April 2019.
  • In April 2021, 8,214 new private cars were licensed in Ireland, more than six times higher than with April 2020. However, when comparing the 2021 data to 2019 (prior to the Covid-19 pandemic), the number of new cars licensed in April shows a decrease of 40.5%.
  • COVID-19 continues to have a major impact on airport passenger numbers, however, the number of passengers travelling through Dublin airport in March 2021 grew by 15.0% compared to the previous month.
