In line with the lifting of the COVID-19 restrictions, traffic count data have increased since the beginning of the year. Car traffic volumes in Dublin increased by 27% between the first week of January and the last week of February, but still remained below pre-COVID-19 levels. For the week beginning 21 February 2022 (week 8), the volumes were 7% lower than the same week in 2019 and 6% lower than the same week in 2020.

Data for selected regional sites followed the same trends. The volumes of private cars in selected regional sites were 8% lower compared with the same week in 2019, and 10% below the same week in 2020. See table 1.1, figure 1.1 and figure 1.2.

The impact of COVID-19 restrictions on heavy goods vehicles (HGV) traffic during 2020 and 2021 was not as strong as it was for cars. HGV traffic in Dublin and selected regional sites was higher in February 2022 than before COVID-19.  For the week beginning 21 February 2022, (week 8), HGV traffic volumes were 7% higher in regional sites compared with the same week in 2019 and 5% higher compared with the same week in 2020. See table 1.2, figure 1.3 and figure 1.4.
