Key findings

  • Car traffic volumes increased considerably in the week beginning 10 May (week 19) compared with the previous week, following the lifting of the intercounty travel restrictions. From week 18 to week 19 car traffic volumes increased by 15.7% in Dublin and by 18.0% in the selected regional sites.
  • Latest available data for the week beginning 24 May (week 21) show that the volume of private cars in selected regional locations was 87.2% higher in week 21 of 2021 than it was in week 21 of 2020, however volumes were still 17.0% lower than in week 21 of 2019.
  • In April and May 2021 HGV traffic volumes in both regional and Dublin locations were above 2020 levels.
  • Latest available data on the total number of rail and bus journeys indicates that they are now at their highest level since the beginning of 2021.
  • April 2021 clearance volumes of petrol were 28% below April 2019.
  • The number of new cars licensed in May 2021 rose by 5,847 vehicles compared with May 2020 but this was 1,789 less than in May 2019.
  • COVID-19 continues to have a major impact on airport passenger numbers, however, the number of passengers travelling through Dublin airport in April 2021 grew by 8.8% compared with the previous month.
