Statistician's Comment
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (19 January2023) published its latest Transport Bulletin for January 2023. This bulletin captures changing traffic volumes and the number of journeys taken on public transport. This bulletin is compiled using data collected by Transport Infrastructure Ireland, the Road Safety Authority, the National Transport Authority, Dublin City Council, the Office of the Revenue Commissioners, and the Department of Transport.
The bulletin shows that while traffic volumes have increased since the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, even by the end of 2022 they continued to remain slightly below pre-pandemic numbers.
Commenting on this latest bulletin, Dr Nele van der Wielen, Statistician in the Transport Division, said: “There were 866 new private cars and 2,886 used (imported) private cars licensed in December 2022. Compared with December 2021, there was an increase of 4% for new private cars and a decrease of 15% for used private cars.

More than 2.5 million passengers used Dublin, Cork, Knock, and Shannon airports in December 2022, 97% of the number of passengers handled in December 2019.
