The number of new cars licensed increased by 3,028 vehicles in July 2023 compared with July 2022

Key Findings

  • In July 2023, the number of new cars licensed increased by 3,028 vehicles (20%) when compared with July 2022.

  • The number of bus journeys in Dublin continued to exceed pre-pandemic figures, with an increase of 2% for week 30 (the week beginning 24 July 2023) when compared with the same week in 2019.

  • The number of bus journeys outside of Dublin for week 30 of 2023 exceeded 2019 figures by 10%.

  • At 289 million litres, clearances of autodiesel in June 2023 were 3% lower than in June 2022 and June 2019.

  • At 84 million litres, clearances of petrol in June 2023 were 7% higher than in June 2022 and were 4% lower than in June 2019.

  • There were 16 fatalities on Irish roads in July 2023 compared with 12 in July 2022 and 10 in July 2019.

  • For Cork airport, figures show that the number of passengers in July 2023 was 13% higher and 1% higher than July 2022 and July 2019 figures, respectively.

  • Figures show that the number of passengers in July 2023 for Dublin airport was 13% higher than July 2022 with no change recorded when compared with July 2019.

Statistician's Comment

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (18 August 2023) published its latest Transport Bulletin for July 2023. This bulletin captures changing traffic volumes and the number of journeys taken on public transport. This bulletin is compiled using data collected by Transport Infrastructure Ireland, the Road Safety Authority, the National Transport Authority, Dublin City Council, the Office of the Revenue Commissioners, and the Department of Transport.

Commenting on this latest bulletin, Dr Nele van der Wielen, Statistician in the Transport Division, said: When it comes to public transport, we can see that in July 2023, the number of bus journeys continued to exceed pre-pandemic figures, with an increase of 2% in Dublin for week 30 of 2023 (the week beginning 24 July 2023) when compared with the same week in 2019. The number of bus journeys outside of Dublin for week 30 of 2023 was 10% higher when compared with the number of journeys in the same week in 2019. Luas journeys for week 30 of 2023 increased by 25% and 7% in comparison to the same week in 2022 and 2019, respectively.

Vehicles Licensed

There were 18,106 new private cars and 4,348 used (imported) private cars licensed in July 2023. Compared with July 2022, there was an increase of 20% for new private cars while used private cars were up 6%.

Road Fatalities

There were 16 fatalities on Irish roads in July 2023 compared with 12 in July 2022 and 10 in July 2019."
