In March 2023 the number of passengers in Dublin airport was 35% higher than March 2022 figures, and 1% higher than those seen in the same month in 2019.
The number of bus journeys in Dublin for week 12 (the week beginning 20 March 2023) was 17% higher compared with the number of journeys in the same week in 2019.
The number of bus journeys outside of Dublin for week 12 of 2023 exceeded 2019 figures by 28%.
The number of new private cars licensed in March 2023 increased by 33% compared with March 2022.
At 75 million litres, clearances of petrol in February 2023 were 14% higher than in February 2022 but were 3% lower than in February 2020.
There were 12 fatalities on Irish roads in March 2023 compared with 16 in March 2022 and 18 in March 2019.

Statistician's Comment
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (20 April 2023) published its latest Transport Bulletin for March 2023. This bulletin captures changing traffic volumes and the number of journeys taken on public transport. This bulletin is compiled using data collected by Transport Infrastructure Ireland, the Road Safety Authority, the National Transport Authority, Dublin City Council, the Office of the Revenue Commissioners, and the Department of Transport.
Commenting on this latest bulletin, Dr Nele van der Wielen, Statistician in the Transport Division, said: “The number of passengers in Dublin airport over the first three months of this year were 2% higher than pre-pandemic 2019 figures. There were 6,589,570 passengers handled by Dublin airport between January and the end of March 2023 compared with 6,480,314 passengers in the same period in 2019.
Public Transport
In March 2023, the number of Luas and bus journeys continued to exceed pre-pandemic figures. The number of bus journeys outside of Dublin for the end of March 2023 (the week 12 beginning 20 March 2023) were 28% higher compared with the numbers of journeys in the same week in 2019. However, please note that the yearly comparison must be treated with caution as week 12 in 2019 included a bank holiday.
Vehicles Licensed
There were 15,782 new private cars and 4,529 used (imported) private cars licensed in March 2023. Compared with March 2022, there was an increase of 33% for new private cars used private cars were up 16%.
Road Fatalities
There were 12 fatalities on Irish roads in March 2023 compared with 16 in March 2022 and 18 in March 2019."
