This chapter focuses on data from the 2016 Census of Population, looking at tenure, household and dwelling types. Data from the Census for years 2006, 2011 and 2016, in the context of this publication, is available on PxStat.
The number of private households in permanent housing units rose from 1,462,296 in 2006 to 1,649,408 in 2011 and 1,697,665 in 2016. This represents an increase of 16.1% between 2006 and 2016.
Households 'owned outright' were the main tenure type in 2016, at 36.0%, a slight increase from 34.1% in 2006. The proportion of households in the category 'own with a mortgage or loan' was 31.6% in 2016, a drop of nine percentage points from 40.6% in 2006. See Table 2.1.
Seven in ten households lived in either a 'detached house' (42.1%) or a 'semi-detached house' (27.8%) in 2016. Between 2006 and 2016, the proportion of households living in a ‘apartment, flat, bedsit’ rose from 10.2% to 12.0%, an increase of 1.8 percentage points. See Table 2.2.
There was very little variation in the proportions of households living in different types of family units between 2006 and 2016. The main family type in 2016 was a 'couple with children' (37.1%), followed by 'single person household' (23.4%) and a 'couple with no children' (20.2%). Lone parents with children were much more likely to be a 'one parent (female) household' (10.0%) than a 'one parent (male) household' (1.7%).

As noted earlier, in 2016 'detached house' was the most common dwelling type in Ireland, at 42.1% of all private permanent households (see Table 2.2). Over half (58.4%) of all homes that were 'owned outright' were detached, and 'detached house' was also most prevalent with those living 'rent-free' (55.0%) and for those who 'own with a mortgage or a loan' (47.8%), see Figure 2.1.
'Semi-detached house' represented the largest proportion for those 'rented from a local authority' at 34.0%. 'Apartment, flat, bedsit' accounted for 37.2% of those renting from a landlord, the highest percentage among the dwelling types listed for this tenure type.

In 2016 three out of five (60.5%) of all households that 'own with a mortgage or a loan' were composed of a 'couple with children', see Figure 2,2.
Just over three in ten (31.1%) households 'rented from a local authority' were one parent households, with 40,974 'one parent (female) household' (28.6%) and 3,549 'one parent (male) household' (2.5%). See Table 2.5.

Couples (with or without children) were more likely to live in a 'detached house' than a 'single person household''. In 2016, 50.2% of 'couple with children' and 47.0% of 'couple with no children' lived in a 'detached house', compared with 35.2% of single people. See Figure 2.3.
Single people were more likely to live in an 'apartment, flat, bedsit' than couples. In 2016, 19.5% of single people lived in an apartment or flat compared with 12.2% of couples with no children and 5.1% of couples with children.

There were 1,697,665 private households in permanent housing units in 2016. Looking at tenure by number of people usually resident shows that the largest category was two person households in dwellings owned outright, at 224,920 households, (13.2%). See Table 2.7.
There were 583,277 private permanent households with children in 2016. Of these, 123,586, (21.2% of all households with children) 'own with a mortgage or a loan'. See Table 2.8.
Two in five households had five or six rooms in 2016. There were 378,691 households (22.3%) with five rooms while 299,371 (17.6%) had six rooms. One-third (33.0%) of tenures 'rented from a local authority' had five rooms.
Mayo had the highest proportion of households 'owned outright' at 46.7% in 2016, compared with 36.0% for the State. The highest proportion of 'own with a mortgage or a loan' was 43.3% in Meath, compared to 31.6% in the State overall, while Galway City had the highest proportion who 'rent from a landlord' at 37.1%, compared to the State at 19.2%. Cork City had the highest proportion of tenures 'rented from a local authority' at 16.5% (State, 8.4%).

Analysing family unit type by the number of persons usually resident shows that four people comprised of a 'couple with children' was the largest single category at 240,762 households, or 14.2% of all households. See Table 2.11.
Just under four in ten (38.0%) of the 583,277 households with children were composed of a couple who had one child. See Table 2.12.
The largest number of households by number of rooms was 378,691 with five rooms. Of these, 131,651 were lived in by a 'couple with children'. See Table 2.13.
Looking at household composition by local authority, Leitrim had the largest percentage of 'single person household' at 30.3% in 2016 (compared to 23.4% for the State) while Meath had the highest percentage of households comprised of 'couple with children' at 47.2% (State overall at 37.1%), see Table 2.14 and Figure 2.5.

Tabulating dwelling type by number of persons shows the largest category with 201,787 households was two persons in a 'detached house', 11.9% of all households. See Table 2.15.
The most common household among those with children was a 'detached house' with two children at 96,701 households, or 16.6% of all households with children present. See Table 2.16.
There were 378,691 households with five rooms, the largest category by number of rooms, and 38.8% of these were a 'semi-detached house'. See Table 2.17.
Galway County had the largest percentage of 'detached house' at 76.9% in 2016, compared with 42.1% for the State, while South Dublin had the highest proportion of 'semi-detached house' at 50.2%, compared with the State at 27.8%. Dublin City had the highest percentage of ‘apartment. flat, bedsit’ at 35.2%, compared with 12.0% nationally.

There were 1,697,665 private permanent households in Census 2016. It was possible to match 1,374,174 (80.9%) of these to Census 2011 and they are examined by family unit and tenure in tables 2.19 and 2.20. Note that while this analysis is based on the same household in 2011 and 2016, it does not necessarily mean that the same people were present in both 2011 and 2016. This matching illustrates the consistencies and changes in family units and tenures between 2011 and 2016.
The tenure type in 2016 with the highest percentage match with the same category as in 2011 was 'owned outright' at 89.1%, followed by 'rented from local authority' at 80.0%. See figure 2.7.
The family unit category in 2016 with the highest percentage match with the same category as in 2011 was 'couple with children' at 75.2%, closely followed by 'single person household' at 72.2%. The lowest percentage match rate was in '2 or more family units' in 2016 compared to 2011 at 29.1%. See figure 2.8.

The average number of 'persons per room' was 0.53 in 2016, a very slight increase from 0.52 in 2006. The highest average number of 'persons per room' in 2016 was 0.72 in tenures 'rented from a local authority' while the lowest of 0.40 was in dwellings which were 'owned outright'. See Table 2.21.
Looking at dwelling types, the highest ratio of persons per room was 0.76 in 2016 in 'apartment, flat, bedsit', while the lowest was in 'detached house' at 0.47.
For family units in 2016, the category with highest ratio was '2 or more family units' at 0.95 (compared with 0.94 and 0.95 in 2006 and 2011 respectively.)
