Electric/hybrid new private cars licensed for the first time in 2018

This chapter presents information on the transport sector of the Irish economy. The tables cover the licensing of new vehicles by taxation class, by make and by local authority, key indicators for goods carried by road, goods handled by Irish ports, and the volume of passengers and freight passing through Irish airports.

There were 121,157 new private cars licensed in 2018, a decrease of 4.6% compared with 2017. In total, there were 157,865 new vehicles licensed during 2018, a decrease of 2.5% compared with 2017.

In 2018, Dublin (57,418) and Cork (19,006) licensing authorities accounted for almost half (48.4%) of all new vehicles licensed for the first time.

Volkswagen (13,496) was the most popular make of new private cars licensed in 2018, followed by Toyota (11,484), Hyundai (10,950), Ford (10,746) and Nissan (9,277). Together these five makes represented almost half (46.2%) of all new private cars licensed.

In 2011, the top make was Toyota (11,065), followed by Volkswagen (11,007), Ford (10,108), Renault (8,478) and Nissan (6,556). These five makes represented more than half (54.3%) of all new private cars licensed in 2011.

In 2018, 54.3% of new private cars licensed were diesel compared with 64.9% in 2017. In 2018, 7.1% of new private cars licensed were electric/electric hybrid (8,567) which was an increase of 66.0% compared with 5,162 in 2017. Within this category, electric only new private cars licensed almost doubled to 1,222 in 2018 from 623 in 2017.

Irish registered goods vehicles carried 150.0 million tonnes of goods on 13.4 million laden journeys in 2018 and the amount of freight activity, as measured by tonne-kilometres, was 11.5 billion.

The average number of registered goods vehicles in the State was estimated at 118,032 in 2018 and the fleet travelled a total of 1.6 billion kilometres.

In 2018, a total of 13,264 vessels arrived at Irish ports, an increase of 3.4% on 2017. General cargo vessels accounted for seven out of every ten (70.9%) vessel arrivals.

Irish ports handled 55.1 million tonnes of goods in 2018, an increase of 3.3% compared with 2017. Great Britain and Northern Ireland remained the main area of trade for Irish sea ports, accounting for two fifths (40.0%) of all goods handled in 2018, while the rest of the EU accounted for over one third (34.1%) of all maritime trade.

In 2018, 36.5 million passengers passed through Ireland's five main airports, an increase of 6.0% over the previous year. 

More than 266,000 commercial flights were handled by Ireland's main airports in 2018.  Dublin accounted for 83.6% of all flights (222,700), while Cork handled 7.7% of all flights (20,400).

Ireland's main airports handled a total of 157,400 tonnes of freight in 2018, and this represented a decrease of 4.0% compared with 2017.

Dublin airport accounted for 80.0% of all passengers passing through Ireland's main airports in 2011. This had increased to 85.8% by 2018.

The most popular destination to and from Ireland's main airports was London-Heathrow with almost 2.5 million (2,489,600) passengers travelling on this route. Six of the top 10 routes were to the UK; London-Heathrow, London-Stansted, London-Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh.

In 2018, passengers travelling to and from the UK represented 35.8% of all passengers (13.0 million) on international flights travelling through main Irish airports. Passengers travelling to and from other destinations were represented as follows: Other EU (46.5%), North America (11.8%), Other Europe (3.1%) and the Rest of the World (2.8%).
