This chapter contains information on June crops and livestock numbers in Ireland for the period 1848 to 2018. The statistics are drawn from CSO surveys and administrative data from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. Livestock Slaughterings provides details on the number of cattle, sheep and pigs slaughtered. These figures include slaughterings at both meat establishments approved by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and slaughterhouses and meat plants approved by Local Authorities under S.I. 432 of 2009.

The total area farmed in 2018 was 4.5 million hectares. Crops, fruit and horticulture accounted for 8% of that area, silage for 24%, hay for 4%, pasture for 53% and rough grazing for 12%.

Overall production of the three main cereals (wheat, oats and barley) fell by 539,000 tonnes (-23%) to 1,854,000 tonnes in 2018. This was due to combined decreases in all three main cereals, wheat production was down 26%, oats production down 40% and barley production down 19%.

The production of potatoes decreased by 139,000 tonnes (-34%) to 273,000 tonnes in 2018.

22.3 Area under selected crops 1848-2018

The long-term decline in tillage is associated more with oats than with any other crop. The area of oats sown in 2018 was 18,000 hectares, representing 3% of the area sown in 1848.

The area of potatoes sown reached its highest value in 1859 at 374,000 hectares. From then onwards the area of potatoes sown has continued to decline with the exception of the war years. In 2018 the area of potatoes sown was 8,000 hectares.

Since 1848 the number of cattle have increased consistently, peaking at 7.64 million in 1998. Cattle numbers in 2018 stand at 7.35 million.

The number of sheep in Ireland peaked at 8.90 million in 1992 and since then numbers have fallen sharply to just 5.11 million in 2018.

The number of pigs in 1848 stood at 0.53 million compared to 1.62 million in 2018. The number of pigs peaked in 1998 at 1.82 million.

Cattle slaughterings in 2018 increased by 2.4% in comparison to 2017.

Pig slaughterings in 2018 increased by 2.7% and Sheep slaughterings increased by 1.3% in comparison to 2017.
