Preliminary estimates for 2022 show that healthcare expenditure was approximately €30.5 billion, an increase of 6.6% compared to 2021.
COVID-19 testing and vaccination expenditure is shown in Table 2.2. Ireland's COVID-19 vaccination programme began at the very end of 2020 and most of the population received their first dose in 2021. Testing and tracing costs continued to rise in 2021 and fell back in 2022. The level of spending on vaccinations also decreased in 2022.
Expenditure on COVID-19 testing was €411 million in 2022, a decrease of 41% compared to 2021. There was €360 million spent on COVID-19 vaccinations in 2022, a decrease of 29% on 2021.
