Turnover in Building & Construction increased by 4.1% in 2020

Break in series for Turnover and Gross Value Added from 2019 due to new methodology.

CSO now have full availability of real time data for wages and social security payments from 2019 onwards. We have found that using this administrative data source increases the accuracy of our data.

Building & Construction data includes this new source of administrative data from reference year 2019 onwards. In this regard, 2019 data has been revised and year 2019 data will represent a break in series. Data prior to reference year 2019 uses imputation for wages and social security payments.

  • Building & Construction Turnover increased by 4.1% to €29.2 billion, while GVA decreased by 7.2% to €8.0 billion in 2020.
  • The number of persons engaged in Construction in Ireland decreased by 0.6% to 157,349. 
  • The average GVA per person engaged decreased from €54,700 in 2019 to €51,000 in 2020.
  • The number of Construction enterprises increased by 5.9% from 59,175 in 2019 to 62,664 in 2020. See Table 4.1 and PxStat Tables.

Large Construction enterprises (250+ persons engaged) recorded a decrease of 11.9% in GVA in 2020. SMEs (<250 persons engaged) in the Construction sector showed an increase of 5.0% in Turnover and a decrease of 6.2% in GVA in 2020.

Persons engaged in SMEs accounted for 91.6% of total persons engaged in the Construction sector in 2020. Persons engaged in Large enterprises increased by 6.5% from 12,414 in 2019 to 13,223 in 2020.

Gross Value Added for SMEs decreased by 6.2% to €6.7 billion in 2020 from €7.2 billion in the previous year. Large enterprises reported a decrease in GVA, which fell by 11.9% from €1.5 billion in 2019 to €1.3 billion in 2020.
