Statistician's Comment
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (23 January 2025) published the Supply and Use for Ireland 2021.
Commenting on the release, Becky Mangan, Statistician, said: “At a high level in the Supply Table, we saw a total of €1.3 trillion worth of products supplied in the Irish economy in 2021. Of this, €860 billion was domestic production, €409 billion was imported, and the rest was made up of taxes and subsidies.
Percentage of Domestic Production and Imports
The percentage shares of domestic production and imports varied widely across product categories.
For example, €11 billion (76%) of Agriculture, Forestry & Fishing Products were domestically produced in 2021, and €2 billion (12%) were imported. Conversely, €22 billion (84%) of Motor Vehicles & Other Transport Equipment were imported, while €641 million (2%) were domestically produced. Domestic production was heavily concentrated in the manufacture of Pharmaceutical, Computer & Electronic Products, as well as Information & Communication Services. Together these products accounted for €401 billion (47%) of total domestic supply.
Exports and Consumption
Exports made up the largest share of total uses in the Irish economy in 2021, at €596 billion, but again, there were large variations depending on the product category. For example, Pharmaceutical, Computer & Electronic Products, mentioned above, were largely exported, worth €199 billion (83%).
However, only €1.5 billion (10%) of Agriculture, Forestry & Fishing Products were exported. The rest were consumed either for further production within the economy or by households and the government.
There were other products that were used almost entirely by other industries for further production. An example of this was Advertising & Market Research Services, where €9.5 billion (98%) of the total supply was consumed by other industries.
Then there were products which were almost entirely consumed by final users, households, the government, and Non-Profit Institutions Serving Households (NPISH). Together these sectors consumed €159 billion (12%) worth of all goods and services, and this consumption was largely concentrated in Human Health Services, worth €20 billion (95%) of total use, and Real Estate Activities, worth €23 billion (81%) of total use.”
