When Motor Trades are excluded, the volume of Retail Sales rose by 0.5% in the month and by 3.7% in the year when compared with June 2022.
The largest monthly volume increases were recorded in Books, Newspapers & Stationery (+12.1%), Furniture & Lighting (+4.7%), Other Retail Sales (+4.3%), and Motor Trades (+2.6%).
The highest monthly volume decreases were in Fuel (-3.4%), Clothing, Footwear & Textiles (-2.8%), and Electrical Goods (-2.8%).
The largest annual volume growth was in Other Retail Sales (+22.6%), Motor Trades (+18.8%), Books, Newspapers & Stationery (+6.6%), and Non-Specialised Stores (incl. Supermarkets) (+5.3%).
Four sectors showed annual volume declines in June 2023, Department Stores (-7.7%), Food, Beverages & Tobacco (Specialised Stores) (-2.5%), Electrical Goods (-2.4%), and Clothing, Footwear & Textiles (-0.6%).
The value of Retail Sales rose by 0.5% in the month and by 11.0% in the 12 months from June 2022.
The proportion of Retail Sales transacted online (from Irish registered companies) was 5.8% in June 2023 compared with 5.2% in May 2023, 5.0% in June 2022, and 4.9% in June 2021.

The proportion of Retail Sales transacted online (from Irish registered companies) was 5.8% in June 2023 and 5.2% in May 2023 compared with 5.0% in June 2022 and 4.9% in June 2021. Excluding Motor Trades, the proportion of Retail Sales transacted online in June 2023 was 7.7% compared with 6.7% in May 2023 and 6.0% in June 2022.

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (28 July 2023) released - Retail Sales Index June 2023 (Provisional) and May 2023 (Final).
Commenting on the release, Tommy Allen, Statistician in the Business Statistics Division, said: "Retail Sales rose by 0.4% in June 2023 when compared with May 2023 on a seasonally adjusted basis. On an annual basis, retail volumes were 7.6% higher than in June 2022. When Motor Trades are excluded the volume of Retail Sales increased by 0.5% in the month and by 3.7% in the year when compared with June 2022 (See Headline Table, Tables 1 & 2, and Figure 1).
Monthly Changes
In June 2023, the largest monthly volume increases were recorded in Books, Newspapers & Stationery (+12.1%), Furniture & Lighting (+4.7%), Other Retail Sales (+4.3%), and Motor Trades (+2.6%).

The value of Retail Sales was 0.5% higher in June 2023 than May 2023 and was up 11.0% when compared with a year earlier. Excluding Motor Trades, the value of Retail Sales rose by 0.4% in the month and by 5.1% on an annual basis (See Tables 1 & 2)."
