Serious crimes against the person include homicide, sexual violence and physical assault. The suspected offenders for these crimes are largely men. Of recorded homicide offences in 2018 which have been detected by March 2020, 56 recorded suspected offenders were males (87.5%) while 8 were female (12.5%). 98% of suspected offenders of detected sexual violence crimes recorded in 2018 were males. 80.5% of suspected offenders of detected physical assaults and related offences in 2018 were males. See Table 4.1.
Within the category of homicide, 31 males (88.6%) were recorded as suspected offenders of Murder or manslaughter compared to 4 (11.4%) female suspected offenders, while 25 males (86.2%) were recorded as suspected offenders of incidents of Dangerous driving leading to death compared to 4 (13.8%) female suspected offenders. Of detected homicide offences in 2018, almost half (46.9%) of suspected offenders were aged between 18 and 29 years at the time the offence occurred. A further 29.7% were aged between 30 and 44 years. See Table 4.2 and Figure 4.3.
For detected sexual violence crimes, 31.1% of suspected offenders were aged between 18 and 29 years at the time the offence occurred, and 27.7% were aged between 30 and 44 years. 84 suspected offenders for detected sexual violence crimes, or almost one in five (19%), were aged under 18 years at the time the offence occurred.
Just over two thirds of suspected offenders (67.5%) of detected physical assaults and related offences were aged between 18 and 44 years. 15.9% of suspected offenders were aged under 18 at the time the offence occurred.
