March 2025 Information Note on Fraud Crime Statistics

In December 2024, An Garda Síochána advised the CSO of a backlog in the recording of potential fraud related crime incidents reported by financial Institutions under Section 19 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2011 on the PULSE system.

This backlog, dating from Q3 2023 onwards, has meant that the Fraud, Deception & Related offences crime series pre and post Q3 2023 are no longer comparable. From Q3 2024, Recorded Crime contains a revised Fraud, Deception and Related Offences series for Q3 2023 onwards based only on fraud crime incidents reported directly to AGS by members of the public. Please see our accompanying Information Note for more details.

The experience across Garda regions for recorded crime was quite mixed in 2024 compared with 2023. There were decreases in recorded crime across all regions for just two offence groups, namely Robbery, Extortion & Hijacking offences and Controlled Drugs offences.

For most other regions, the experience was quite mixed. For example,

  • The number of crime incidents involving Attempts/Threats to Murder, Assaults, Harassments & Related offences rose by 9% for the Dublin Metropolitan region (DMR) and by 6% for the Eastern region. In contrast, recorded crime incidents for this offence group fell by 3% for the North Western region and by 5% for the Southern region.
  • Recorded crime incidents involving Weapons & Explosives offences increased by 8% for the DMR region and by 9% for the Southern region but fell by 1% for the Eastern region.
  • The number of recorded crime incidents involving Public Order & Other Social Code offences rose by 13% for the DMR region and by 5% for the Eastern region. However, there were little or no percentage change in this offence group for the other regions. See Figure 3.1 and Table 3.1.

An Garda Síochána are currently in the process of the rolling out of a new Operation Model. This will involve a fundamental change to the organisational structure from the existing District Based Model to a new Divisional Functional Area Model. Further updates will follow in due course.
