March 2025 Information Note on Fraud Crime Statistics

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (03 March 2025) issued an Information Note on Fraud Crime Statistics to accompany the Recorded Crime Q3 2024 release.

The Recorded Crime Q3 2024 release was due to be published in December 2024 but was postponed to allow the CSO engage with An Garda Síochána (AGS) regarding a reported backlog in the recording of potential fraud related crime incidents reported by financial Institutions under Section 19 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2011 on the PULSE system.

Users should be aware that as a result, the Fraud, Deception & Related offences crime series pre and post Q3 2023 are no longer comparable, and this release, Recorded Crime Q3 2024, contains a revised Fraud, Deception and Related Offences series from Q3 2023 onwards based only on fraud crime incidents reported directly to AGS by members of the public. Please see our accompanying Information Note for more details.

The number of recorded crime incidents involving Burglary, Theft and Weapon crimes increased across all regions in the year to Q3 2024. The details are as follows:

  • The largest rate of increase for incidents involving Burglary & Related offences was for the Southern region at 23%, followed by the Eastern region (+9%). The Dublin Metropolitan Region (DMR) had the lowest rate of increase at 5%.
  • Theft & Related offences had the largest rate of increase in the number of recorded incidents for the Eastern region (+11%) compared with increases of 9% for the Southern region and 7% for the DMR. The rate for the North Western region was 2%.
  • The number of crime incidents involving Weapons & Explosives offences rose by 16% in the DMR and this was followed by the Southern region at 13%. The rate for the other two regions was between 4% and 5%.

By contrast, the number of recorded crime incidents fell across all regions for Controlled Drug offences. The largest rate of decrease was for the Southern region (-11%), and this was followed by the Eastern region (-9%). The rate of decrease was 3% for the DMR and North Western regions.

For all other offence groups, the experience across Garda regions was mixed. See Figure 3.1 and Table 3.1.

An Garda Síochána are currently in the process of the rolling out of a new Operation Model. This will involve a fundamental change to the organisational structure from the existing District Based Model to a new Divisional Functional Area Model. Further updates will follow in due course.
