The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (03 March 2025) issued an Information Note on Fraud Crime Statistics to accompany the Recorded Crime Q3 2024 release.
The Recorded Crime Q3 2024 release was due to be published in December 2024 but was postponed to allow the CSO engage with An Garda Síochána (AGS) regarding a reported backlog in the recording of potential fraud related crime incidents reported by financial Institutions under Section 19 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2011 on the PULSE system.
Users should be aware that as a result, the Fraud, Deception & Related offences crime series pre and post Q3 2023 are no longer comparable, and this release, Recorded Crime Q3 2024, contains a revised Fraud, Deception and Related Offences series from Q3 2023 onwards based only on fraud crime incidents reported directly to AGS by members of the public. Please see our accompanying Information Note for more details.
Table 4.1 provides further breakdown by offence type of the total number of recorded crime incidents in the year to Q3 2024 compared with the year to Q3 2023.
There were 75 recorded incidents of Homicide & Related offences in the year to Q3 2024 and this was down by 10 incidents or 12% from the same period in 2023. Nearly all of this decrease was accounted for by a fall in incidents of Dangerous Driving Leading to Death (-11 incidents or -24%).
The increase of 878 or 10% in the number of recorded incidents of Burglary & Related offences over the year was driven by an increase of 864 or 10% in the number of incidents of Burglary where there was no aggravation.
Increases in incidents of Theft from Shop (+3,034 incidents or +10%) accounted for nearly six out of every ten (57%) of the overall increase of 5,331 or 7% in the number of incidents of Theft & Related offences in the year to Q3 2024 compared with twelve months earlier. There was also an increase in incidents involving Theft from Person, rising by 680 incidents or 20% to 4,077 incidents over the year.
A fall of 779 or 7% in the number of incidents of Possession of Drugs for Personal Use offences coupled with a fall of 424 or 8% in incidents involving Possession of Drugs for Sale or Supply offences accounted for most of the fall of 1,129 or 6% in the number of incidents of Controlled Drug offences.
Finally, a fall of 740 or 5% in the number of recorded incidents of Offences While in Custody and Breach of Court Orders accounted for much of the fall of 1,108 incidents or 7% in incidents of Offences against Government, Justice Procedures & Organisation of Crime in the year to Q3 2024 compared to a year earlier.
