Lifting of Under Reservation Categorisation

Following the publication of the fifth Review of the Quality of Crime Statistics in October 2023, the Central Statistics Office (CSO) has lifted the 'Under Reservation' categorisation around Recorded Crime Statistics. This is possible because An Garda Síochána have introduced a range of quality measures over the last number of years which have resulted in sustained improvement in the quality of the underlying crime data. These changes give a level of assurance to users that they can rely on Recorded Crime Statistics.

For further information see our Lifting of Under Reservation categorisation for Recorded Crime Statistics FAQ page.

The number of recorded crime incidents increased across all regions for four out of the fourteen offence groups in the year to Q2 2024. Among these were as follows:

  • Fraud, Deception & Related offences had the largest rates of increase for the North Western (+33%) and Eastern regions (+28%), while the lowest was for the Dublin Metropolitan (DMR) region at 13%.
  • Robbery, Extortion & Hijacking & Related offences had the largest rate of increase in the DMR region (+13%) and this compared with a 2% rise for each of the other regions.
  • Burglary & Related offences had the largest rate of increase for the Southern region (+32%) with the lowest for the DMR region at 2%.
  • Theft & Related offences had the largest rate of increase in the Eastern region (+13%) compared with increases of between 6% and 7% for the other regions.

By contrast, the number of recorded crime incidents for a further two offence groups fell across all regions during the same period.

  • Controlled Drug offences: The largest rate of decrease was for the Eastern region (-11%), and this was followed by the Southern region (-9%). The lowest rate of decrease was for the North Western region at 1%.
  • Offences against Government, Justice Procedures & Organisation of Crime: The largest rates of decrease were 14% for each of the DMR and Southern regions, followed by the North Western region (-12%). The lowest rate of decrease was for the Eastern region (-7%).

For all other offence groups, the experience across Garda regions was mixed. See Figure 3.1 and Table 3.1.

An Garda Síochána are currently in the process of the rolling out of a new Operation Model. This will involve a fundamental change to the organisational structure from the existing District Based Model to a new Divisional Functional Area Model. Further updates will follow in due course.
