Following the publication of the fifth Review of the Quality of Crime Statistics in October 2023, the Central Statistics Office (CSO) has lifted the 'Under Reservation' categorisation around Recorded Crime Statistics. This is possible because An Garda Síochána have introduced a range of quality measures over the last number of years which have resulted in sustained improvement in the quality of the underlying crime data. These changes give a level of assurance to users that they can rely on Recorded Crime Statistics.

Table 4.1 provides further breakdown by offence type of the total number of recorded crime incidents in the year to Q2 2024 compared with the year to Q2 2023.
There were 71 recorded incidents of Homicide & Related offences in the year to Q2 2024 and this was down 13 or 15% from the same period in 2023. Decreases in Incidents of Murder (-9 or -20%) and Dangerous Driving Leading to Death (-6 or -16%) accounted for most of the change over the year.
Recorded crime incidents of Robbery, Extortion & Hijacking offences rose by 195 or 8% over the year and this was driven mainly by an increase in incidents of Robbery from the Person offences (+134 or +13%).
The increase of 838 or 9% in the number of recorded incidents of Burglary & Related offences was driven by an increase of 822 or 10% in the number of incidents of Burglary where there was no aggravation.
Increases in incidents of Theft from Shop (+2,625 or 9%) accounted for nearly half (49%) of the overall increase of 5,354 or 8% in the number of incidents of Theft & Related offences in the year to Q2 2024 compared with twelve months earlier. In the year to Q2 2024, Theft from Shop accounted for just over four in every ten (43%) incidents of Theft & Related offences. There was also a significant increase in incidents involving Theft from Person, rising by 1,174 or 39% to 4,206 over the year.
A fall of 1,111 or 9% in the number of incidents of Possession of Drugs for Personal Use accounted for most of the fall of 1,208 or 7% in the number of Controlled Drug offences.
Finally, a fall of 1,598 or 10% in the number of recorded incidents of Offences While in Custody and Breach of Court Orders accounted for much of the fall of 2,086 or 13% in incidents of Offences against Government, Justice Procedures & Organisation of Crime in the year to Q2 2024 compared to a year earlier.
