The number of recorded crime incidents increased across all regions for five out of the fourteen offence categories in the year to Q2 2023. Among these, the more significant rates of change were in Homicide, Fraud, Deception & Related offences, Theft and Robbery crimes. See Figure 3.1 and Table 3.1.
The number of recorded incidents of Homicide offences increased by 47% in the Dublin Metropolitan region and by 38% in the Eastern region. These were followed by the North Western (+31%) and Southern (+8%) regions.
Recorded Incidents of Theft and Related offences increased substantially across all regions with the highest percentage increases in the North Western (+38%) and Eastern (+30%) regions. The rate of increase was 27% for the Southern region and 20% for the Dublin Metropolitan region.
The Southern region (+64%) showed the highest rate of increase in recorded incidents classified as Robbery, Extortion and Hijacking offences. This was followed by the North Western (+37%) and Eastern (+27%) regions while there was just a 9% increase in the Dublin Metropolitan region.
Recorded crime incidents of Attempts/Threats to Murder, Assaults, Harassments & Related offences showed the highest percentage increases in the Eastern region (+8%) while there were increases of between 1% and 2% for all other regions.
The number of recorded crime incidents of Damage to Property & to the Environment showed the highest percentage increase in the Eastern (+10%) and North Western (+9%) regions while there was an increase of 6% in each of the Dublin Metropolitan and Southern regions.
By contrast, there were decreases across all regions for three offence categories with the most significant being Fraud, Deception & Related offences. The largest decrease in number of incidents of this offence was for the North Western (-43%) and the Eastern (-41%) regions, while the lowest was in the Dublin Metropolitan region (-29%).
An Garda Síochána are currently in the process of the rolling out of a new Operation Model. This will involve a fundamental change to the organisational structure from the existing District Based Model to a new Divisional Functional Area Model. Further updates will follow in due course.
