Table 4.1 provides further breakdown by offence type of the total number of recorded crime incidents in the year to Q2 2023 compared with the corresponding period a year earlier.
There were 71 recorded instances of Homicide offences in the year to Q2 2023 and this was up by 31% or 17 from the same period in 2022. A near doubling (+96%) of crime incidents of Murder to 47 accounted for most of this change.
There was an increase of 727 or 3% in the number of crime incidents classified as Attempts/Threats to Murder, Assaults, Harassments & Related offences compared to the previous 12 months. The majority of this arose from increases in incidents of Other Assault (+735 or 5%). The Other Assault category would include incidents of, for example, Minor Assault.
The number of recorded crime incidents of Dangerous or Negligent Acts fell by 957 or 11% over the year to Q2 2023. This was driven by a fall of 562 or 25% in the number of incidents of Driving/in charge or a Vehicle Under the Influence of Drugs and a fall of 338 or 6% in the number of incidents of Driving/In Charge of a Vehicle While Over Legal Alcohol Limit.
Robbery, Extortion & Hijacking offences were up by 410 or 21% over the year and increases in Robbery from the Person and Blackmail or Extortion offences contributed to most of this increase.
The number of incidents of Burglary & Related offences fell by 819 or 8% in the year to Q2 2023. A fall in the number of incidents involving Burglary (not aggravated) was the main driver of this change.
Increases in incidents of Theft from Shop and Other Thefts & Handling Stolen Property offences accounted for most of the increase of 14,333 or 25% in incidents of Theft & Related offences in the year to Q2 2023.
Possession of Drugs, either for sale, supply or personal use increased by a combined 19% over the year. This accounted for most of the increase of 971 or 6% in recorded incidents of Controlled Drugs offences in the year to Q2 2023. The number of recorded incidents of Damage to Property and to the Environment offences were up by 1,530 or 7% over the year and an increase in incidents of Criminal Damage (not arson) accounted for nearly all of this increase.
Finally, a reduction of 890 or 3% in recorded incidents of Disorderly Conduct contributed largely to the fall of 607 or 2% in Public Order & Other Social offences in the year to Q2 2023.
