The Midland region (Laois, Longford, Offaly, and Westmeath) was the second smallest agricultural producing region in 2022, generating just 10% of the State’s output. It created 12% of the total value of Irish Livestock and 9% of Irish Milk. It was the third largest Pig producer, generating 18% of national output. The region was the smallest producer of Crops, growing just 9% of the State’s total.
The value of the region’s Agricultural Output at Basic Prices increased by 32% (+€317m) to €1.3bn. Livestock, which generated 43% of the region’s Agricultural Output at Basic Prices, grew by 17% (+€82m) to €564m, the largest rate of increase of all regions. With its value up by 18% to €392m, Cattle accounted for €59m of this rise. The value of Pigs grew by 19% (+€18m) to €115m. Cereals represented a further 6% of the region’s Agricultural Output at Basic Prices and their value increased by 64% (+€28m) to €73m. Milk was responsible for generating 35% of the region’s output, and with both higher yields and dairy cow numbers, the value of the region’s Milk production rose by 61% (+€174) to €461m, the highest growth rate of all regions.
The region’s Intermediate Consumption costs increased by 30% (+€197m) to €864m. The cost of Feeding Stuffs grew by 32% (+€60m) to €249m. Expenditure on Fertilisers was up 108% (+€69m) to €134m while Energy & Lubricant costs rose by 41% (+€22m) to €77m. The region’s Operating Surplus increased by 51% (+€107m) to €317m, the highest growth rate of all regions (See Tables 1.2, 1.3 and 8.1).
