Type of Pension Coverage

Of those workers who had a pension in Quarter 3 2020, almost seven in ten (69.7%) had Occupational pension coverage only (from current or previous employments), 12.3% had Personal pension coverage only, while 18.0% had Both occupational and personal pensions for their retirement. See Table 3.1.

In quarter 3 2020, personal pension coverage for persons in employment decreased by almost three percentage points on the same period in 2019 – 12.3% compared with 15.1% in 2019. Similarly, supplementary pension coverage (from Both occupational and personal pension schemes) of workers aged between 20 and 69 years, decreased by over five percentage points – 18.0% in Quarter 3 2020 compared with 23.4% in the same survey period in 2019. See Table 3.1 and Figure 3.1.

In Quarter 3 2020, the Public administration and defence; compulsory social security NACE economic sector had the greatest proportion of workers (24.0%) with pension coverage from both occupational and personal pensions, followed by the Education sector (21.7%). During the COVID-19 pandemic, persons in this sector would have largely remained in employment with perhaps some availing of remote working. See Table 3.2.

Analysis of pension coverage by broad occupational group shows that persons whose broad occupational group was Professionals (21.2%), had the greatest proportion of workers with both occupational and personal pension coverage, followed closely by Managers, directors and senior officials (21.0%). Of workers with pension provision in the Associate Professional and Technical group, one fifth (20.1%) had both types of pension. See Table 3.2.

The NACE economic sector with the highest rate of occupational pension cover only was Financial, Insurance and real estate activities (81.2%), followed by Human health and social work activities (76.4%). Workers in the Industry (76.0%), Public administration and defence; compulsory social security (74.5%) and Education (73.4%) had the next highest rates of occupational pension coverage only. See Table 3.2.

Nearly one quarter (24.0%) or pension holders in the Public administration and defence; compulsory social security sector had both occupational and personal pension coverage, while just 1.5% had personal pension coverage only. Over one fifth (20.5%) of persons in employment in the Information and communication sector who had pension coverage have both types of pension. See Table 3.2.
