Networked Gas Daily Consumption February 2023

Gas consumption by power plants in February 2023 was 33% higher than in February 2022

Online ISSN: 2811-6240
CSO statistical publication, , 11am

Key Findings

  • Total networked gas consumption in February 2023 was 7.8% higher than in February 2022. Gas consumption by power plants was 33% higher while gas consumption by non-daily metered customers was 19% lower than in February 2022 (See Table 1).

  • The mean wind speed at Dublin airport was lower on 24 days of February 2023 compared with February 2022 (See Tables 8A and 8B).

  • There were six days in February 2023 where the maximum daily temperature at Dublin airport was 12 oC or higher compared with only one day in February 2022 (See Tables 7A and 7B).

Statistician's Comment

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (03 May 2023) published Networked Gas Daily Consumption February 2023.

Commenting on the release Dympna Corry, Statistician in the Environment and Climate Division, said: "Total metered gas consumption was 4,586 gigawatt hours (GWh) for February 2023 which was 8% higher than the corresponding figure for February 2022 (See Table 1).

Gas consumed by power plants to generate electricity in February 2023 was 33% higher than in February 2022 and 17% higher than in February 2021 (See Table 1).

Gas consumed by non-daily metered customers was 19% lower than in February 2022 and 24% lower than in February 2021 (See Table 1).

Mean daily wind speeds at Dublin airport in February 2023 were lower than the corresponding day in February 2022 on 24 of the 28 days in the month (see Tables 8A and 8B). The lower wind speeds reduce the amount of electricity that can be generated by wind farms and consequently result in more electricity being generated by power plants."

Meteorological data

This release includes information on the maximum daily air temperature at Dublin airport and the daily mean wind speed at Dublin airport (See Tables 7A, 7B, 8A and 8B). The amount of wind influences the balance between electricity generated from natural gas and from wind turbines. The maximum daily air temperature impacts on household heating demand on colder days.
