Total metered gas consumption in December 2022 was 5,630 gigawatt hours (GWh) which was 13% higher than December 2021 (see Tables 1A and 1B).
Metered gas consumption by power plants was 3,245 GWh in December 2022 which was 21% higher than December 2021 (see Tables 2A and 2B).
January 2021 at 5,881 GWh was the month with the highest consumption of networked gas during 2021 and 2022 (see Tables 1A and 1B).
The date with the highest daily total networked gas consumption figure in 2021 and 2022 was 15 December 2022 at 259 GWh (see Tables 1A and 1B).
The 15 December 2022 date was also the highest figure for natural gas consumption by power plants during 2021 and 2022 at 160 GWh (see Tables 2A and 2B).
In 2021 and 2022, the period with the highest consumption of natural gas by non-daily metered customers was 08-13 February 2021. On 11 February 2021 gas consumption was 84 GWh followed by 81 GWh on 09 February 2021 (see Tables 3A and 3B). This coincided with a cold spell over the same period (see Table 7B).
Mid-February 2021 was also a period with high mean wind speeds. The 13 February 2021 (20.5 knots) and 07 February 2021 (20.1 knots) dates were the third and fourth highest days for mean wind speed at Dublin airport in 2021 and 2022 (see Tables 8A and 8B).
This is a new statistical release based on open data provided by Gas Networks Ireland and Met Éireann. The three data series used in this release are: daily networked gas consumption by customer type; maximum daily air temperature at Dublin airport; and mean daily wind speed at Dublin airport. The period covered is 2021 and 2022. The release provides indications of how natural gas volumes vary with the availability of wind-generated electricity and with heating of buildings during cold periods. The release will be published monthly. It may be possible to extend the daily networked gas consumption series back to 2018 which would facilitate a more detailed analysis of trends in daily gas consumption in comparison with meteorological data.

Statistician's Comment
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (30 March 2023) released Networked Gas Daily Consumption December 2022.
Commenting on the release Dympna Corry, Statistician in the Environment and Climate Division, said: "Metered gas consumption by power plants was 3,245 GWh in December 2022 which was 21% higher than the corresponding figure in December 2021 (see Tables 2A and 2B).
The 15 December 2022 (259 gigawatt hours), 09 December 2022 (255 GWh), and 12 December 2022 (248 GWh) dates were the three days with the highest consumption of networked gas during 2021 and 2022 (see Tables 1A and 1B). This coincided with a cold period where the maximum daily air temperatures at Dublin airport were 0.3 oC on 10 December 2022, 0.4 oC on 09 December 2022 and 0.7 oC on 12 December 2022 (see Tables 7A and 7B).
A cold spell in mid-February 2021 resulted in higher levels of gas consumption by non-daily metered customers (residential and small businesses). There were 84 GWh used on the 11 February 2021 and 81 GWh on the 09 February 2021. The next two highest daily gas consumption figures for non-daily metered customers were 80 GWh on 08 January 2021 and 79 GWh on 07 January 2021 (see Tables 3B and 7B). These were followed by 12 February 2021 (79 GWh), 10 February 2021 (78 GWh), and 08 February 2021 (77 GWh).
Average daily gas consumption in a month
The month with the highest average daily total gas consumption during 2021 and 2022 was January 2021 at 190 GWh. Looking at the average daily total networked gas consumption in a month in 2022, we can see it varied from a low of 131 GWh in October to a high of 182 GWh in December 2022 (see Tables 1A and 1B).
The highest average daily consumption for power plants in any month was 121 GWh in August 2022 while the lowest was 72 GWh in February 2022 (see Tables 2A and 2B).
The month with the highest average daily gas consumption for non-daily read meters was January 2021 at 63 GWh. The month with the lowest average daily consumption for non-daily read meters was August 2022 at 9 GWh reflecting a reduced need for heating in August (see Tables 3A and 3B).
Meteorological data
The release includes information on the maximum daily air temperature at Dublin airport and the daily mean wind speed at Dublin airport (see Tables 7A, 7B, 8A and 8B). These two indicators influence both the balance between electricity generated from natural gas and from wind turbines and the heating demand."
