Networked Gas Daily Consumption April 2023

Gas consumption was 8% lower in April 2023 compared with April 2022

Online ISSN: 2811-6240
CSO statistical publication, , 11am

Key Findings

  • Total networked gas consumption in April 2023 was 8% lower than in April 2022 (See Table 1).

  • Gas consumption by non-daily metered customers in April 2023 was 11% lower than April 2022 (See Table 1).

  • Gas consumption by power plants to generate electricity in April 2023 was 8% lower than in April 2022 (See Table 1).

  • Two periods in April 2023 had daily mean wind speeds above 10 knots, 09-13 April and 19-21 April, coinciding with lower periods of power plant gas consumption (See Tables 3A and 8A).

Statistician's Comment

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (31 July 2023) published Networked Gas Daily Consumption April 2023.

Commenting on the release Kevin Hunt, Statistician in the Environment and Climate Division, said: “Total metered gas consumption was 4,485 gigawatt hours (GWh) for April 2023, which was 8% lower than in April 2022 and also 8% lower than in April 2021 (See Table 1).

Gas consumption by non-daily metered customers in April 2023 was 11% lower than April 2022 and 19% lower than April 2021 (See Table 1). Non-daily metered gas consumption was lower for the first 11 days in April 2023 compared with April 2022 (See Tables 4A and 4B). The maximum daily temperature at Dublin Airport in April 2023 was higher than in April 2022 on nine of those first 11 days (See Tables 7A and 7B).

Gas consumption by daily metered customers in April 2023 was 3% lower than in April 2022, while large daily metered customer gas consumption in April 2023 was 7% below that of April 2022. Gas consumed by power plants to generate electricity in April 2023 was 8% lower than April 2022 (See Table 1).

Mean wind speed at Dublin Airport exceeded 10 knots on eight days of April 2023, from 09-13 April (12.8, 10.8, 10.8, 15.6 and 11.8 knots) and from 19-21 April 2023 (16.3, 15.1, and 15.3 knots) (See Table 8A). Power plant gas consumption was below the monthly average of 93 GWh on seven of these eight days, with six among the lowest 10 days by consumption for April 2023. Power plant consumption for the period 09-12 April was 43 GWh, 57 GWh, 45 GWh, and 52 GWH, while consumption for the period 19-21 April was 73 GWh, 56 GWh, and 89 GWh (See Table 3A).

Meteorological Data

This release includes information on the maximum daily air temperature at Dublin airport and the daily mean wind speed at Dublin airport (See Tables 7A, 7B, 8A and 8B). The amount of wind influences the balance between electricity generated from natural gas and from wind turbines. The maximum daily air temperature impacts on household heating demand on colder days."
