There was an increase of 9% in the number of non-domestic Building Energy Rating (BER) audits reported between April and June (Q2) 2023 compared with Q2 2022 (See Table A and Table 1).
Of the non-domestic BER audits conducted on buildings since 2009, 3% were awarded an A rating, 14% a B rating, and 32% were given a C rating (See Table 3).
More than one-third (35%) of non-domestic buildings constructed between 2020 and 2023 received an A rating compared with 21% built between 2015-2019 (See Table 13).
The most energy efficient building type audited during 2009-2023 was Schools & Colleges with 40% awarded an A rating (See Table 3).
The highest proportion of A ratings for non-domestic buildings was in County Kildare at 6% (See Table 4).
Looking at Dublin postal districts, Dublin 20 had the highest proportion of A rated non-domestic buildings at 6% (See Table 5).
BER certificates expire after 10 years unless a new audit has been undertaken. This means that certificates from earlier years have expired if they were not updated. The CSO has included these expired certificates in this release in order to have a more representative analysis of energy efficiency in the non-domestic sector.

Statistician's Comment
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (17 July 2023) released Non-Domestic Building Energy Ratings for Q2 2023.
Commenting on the release Kevin Hunt, Statistician in the Environment and Climate Division, said: "There were 1,191 Building Energy Rating (BER) audits reported between April and June (Q2) 2023 compared with 1,090 in Q2 2022. There was a 3% decrease in the number of non-domestic BER audits reported in April 2023 when compared with April 2022 (See Table A). The number of non-domestic BER audits in May 2023 was 14% higher than May 2022, while June 2023 was 18% greater than June 2022. There were 73,228 non-domestic BER audits conducted in the period 2009 to 2023 (See Table 1). Of the non-domestic BER audits conducted since 2009, 3% of buildings were awarded an A rating, 14% a B rating, and 32% were given a C rating (See Table 3).
Period of Construction
BER audits were conducted for 1,835 non-domestic buildings constructed between 2020 and 2023. More than one-third (35%) of these buildings received an A rating compared with 21% of non-domestic buildings constructed during 2015 to 2019 (See Table 13).
Energy Efficiency
The most energy efficient building types audited during 2009-2023 were Schools & Colleges with 40% awarded an A rating. The second most energy efficient buildings were Nursing Residential Homes & Hostels with 12% rated A. The least energy efficient building types, defined by a G rating, were Workshops & Maintenance Depots (23%), followed by Other Buildings (19%) (See Table 3).
Local Area Analysis
The highest proportion of A ratings by county was in County Kildare at 6%. Counties Kilkenny and Sligo had the highest proportion of G rated buildings at 17% each (See Table 4). Looking at Dublin postal districts, Dublin 20 had the highest proportion of A ratings at 6% followed by 5% for Dublin 15. The highest proportion of G ratings was 19% in Dublin 8 (See Table 5).
Floor Area
The average floor area of all audited non-domestic dwellings was 705 square metres. This average size varied from 3,147 square metres for hotels to 288 square metres for Restaurants & Public Houses (See Table 10)."
