There was an increase of 9% in the number of non-domestic Building Energy Rating (BER) audits reported between January and March (Q1) 2023 compared with Q1 2022 (see Table 1).
Of the non-domestic BER audits conducted on buildings since 2009, 3% were awarded an A rating, 14% a B rating, and 32% were given a C rating (see Table 3).
More than one-third (36%) of non-domestic buildings constructed between 2020 and 2023 received an A rating compared with 21% built between 2015-2019 (see Table 13).
The most energy efficient building type audited during 2009-2023 was Schools and Colleges with 40% awarded an A rating (see Table 3).
The highest proportion of A ratings for non-domestic buildings was in County Kildare at 6% (see Table 4).
Looking at Dublin postal districts, Dublin 15 had the highest proportion of A rated non-domestic buildings at 5% (see Table 5).
BER certificates expire after ten years unless a new audit has been undertaken. This means that many of the 2009 certificates expired in 2019. The CSO has included these expired certificates in this release.

Commenting on the release Dympna Corry, Statistician in the Environment and Climate Division, said: "There were 1,112 Building Energy Rating (BER) audits reported between January and March (Q1) 2023 compared with 1,022 in Q1 2022. There was a 22% increase in the number of non-domestic BER audits reported in January 2023 when compared with January 2022. The number of non-domestic BER audits decreased in February 2023 which was 19% lower than February 2022, while March 2023 rates were 29% greater than March 2022.
