Second quarter of 2021 sees Compensation of Employees increase by 12.1% compared to corresponding period of previous year following some easing of restrictions. Largest increase seen in Construction (45.5%), Distribution, Transport, Hotels and Restaurants (19.9%) and Arts, Entertainment and Other Services (21.6%) sectors. While Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing seen a drop of -2.7%.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, total Compensation of Employees increased by 2.5% compared to the previous quarter. Most sectors experienced an increase this quarter compared to the pervious. Largest increase in growth quarter on quarter can be seen in Construction (9.7%) and Arts, Entertainment and Other Services (9.4) sectors. While Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing seen a drop of -0.3%.

In a new table this quarter, we show the total amounts supplied under the Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme (EWSS). For Q2 2021 these remain largely unchanged on the previous quarter, at just over €1bn. Distribution, Transport, Hotels and Restaurants receives the largest amount of EWSS payments, followed by Public Admin, Education and Health and Professional, Admin and Support Services.
Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme payments as a percentage of Compensation of Employees remains at 4.1% this quarter. The Arts, Entertainment and Other Services sector EWSS payments as a percentage of Compensation of Employees sees an increase this quarter, up to 17.7% from 14.4% in Q1 2021.
The Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme replaced the Temporary Wage Subsidy Scheme from 1 September 2020. More information on the Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme is available on the Revenue.ie website.
