Personal Consumption Expenditure declined by 5.9% in Q1

On the expenditure side of the accounts (Table 3.5), Capital Investment, showed a decrease of €6.5 billion in Q1 compared with the previous quarter and accounted for 36.6% of total domestic demand in Q1 2021.

Personal Consumption Expenditure declined by 5.9% in Q1 compared to Q4, while Government expenditure decreased by 2.2% over the same period. Combining this with the growth in net exports, there was an overall increase in real GDP of 8.6% in Q1 compared to Q4.

Comparisons with Q1 2020
On the expenditure side of the accounts (Table 3.3) Capital Investment contracted by €63.6 billion driven by Intellectual Property Products (IPP). Personal Consumption Expenditure exhibited a year-on-year decline of 11.8% reflecting ongoing COVID-19 related restrictions to economic activity while Government expenditure increased by 12.3% over the same period.
