Domestic Milk Intake by milk processors and co-ops was estimated at 1.13 billion litres in May 2024, a decrease of 26.4 million litres (-2.3%) when compared with May 2023 and down 33.3 million litres (-2.9%) when compared with the same month in 2022.
Fat content for May 2024 was 4.05%, up from 3.96% in May 2023. Protein content fell marginally from 3.40% to 3.38% in the 12 months to May 2024.
Skimmed Milk Powder production was down by 7,700 tonnes, from 25,800 tonnes in May 2023 to 18,100 tonnes in May 2024.
For the period January to May 2024, Domestic Milk Intake was estimated at 3.34 billion litres, a decline of 210.9 million litres (-5.9%) when compared with the same period in 2023, and down by 241 million litres (-6.7%) when compared with January to May 2022.
Figure 1 shows up-to-date trends of monthly domestic milk intake for 2023 and 2024.
Table 1 presents analysis on month versus month comparisons of the current year and previous year's domestic milk intake.

Statistician's Comment
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (05 July 2024) published Milk Statistics for May 2024.
Commenting on the release, Giselle Myles, Statistician in the Agriculture Section of the CSO, said: “Today's release shows a decrease in Domestic Milk Intake by milk processors and co-ops of 2.3% in May 2024 when compared with the same month in 2023. Fat content increased from 3.96% in May 2023 to 4.05% in May 2024, while Protein content marginally decreased from 3.40% to 3.38% over the same period. Butter production in May 2024 decreased by 4.1%, compared with the same month in 2023. Skimmed Milk Powder was also down by 29.8% with respect to May 2023."
