Domestic Milk Intake by creameries and pasteurisers was estimated at 1,164.4 million litres in May 2023, a marginal decrease of 0.1% (-1.5 million litres) when compared with May 2022 and down by 1.4% (-16.6 million litres) when compared with May 2021.
Fat content rose from 3.95% in May 2022 to 3.96% in May 2023. Protein content fell from 3.45% to 3.40% over the same period.
Butter production increased by 1,100 tonnes, from 32,000 tonnes in May 2022 to 33,100 tonnes in May 2023.
Skim Milk Powder production fell by 6.4% from 28,300 tonnes in May 2022 to 26,400 tonnes in May 2023.
Domestic Milk Intake for the period January to May 2023 was estimated at 3,555.3 million litres, a decline of 24.6 million litres (-0.7%) when compared with the corresponding period for 2022.
Table 1 presents analysis on month versus month and year-to-date comparisons of the current year and previous year's domestic milk intake.
Figure 1 shows up-to-date trends of monthly domestic milk intake for 2022 and 2023.

Statistician's Comment
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (04 July 2023) published Milk Statistics for May 2023.
Commenting on the release Dr Grzegorz Głaczyński, Statistician in the Agriculture Section of the CSO, said: “The figures show a marginal decrease in Domestic Milk Intake by creameries and pasteurisers of 0.1% in May 2023 when compared with the same month in 2022. Domestic Milk Intake declined by 0.7% (24.6 million litres) during the period January to May 2023, compared with the same period in 2022. Fat content increased to 3.96% in May 2023 from 3.95% in May 2022, while Protein content dropped to 3.40% from 3.45% over the same period.”
