Domestic Milk Intake by milk processors and co-ops was estimated at 267.1 million litres in December 2024, an increase of 61.8 million litres (+30.1%) when compared with December 2023, but was down by 15.7 million litres (-5.5%) when compared with the same month in 2022.
Fat content for December 2024 was 4.83%, up from 4.79% in December 2023. Protein content rose from 3.70% to 3.80% in the 12 months to December 2024.
Skim Milk Powder production was up from 8,800 tonnes in December 2023 to 10,700 tonnes in December 2024, an increase of 1,900 tonnes.
Butter production rose from 11,100 tonnes in December 2023 to 12,400 tonnes in December 2024.
In 2024, Domestic Milk Intake was estimated at 8.43 billion litres, a marginal drop of 30.6 million litres (-0.4%) when compared with 2023, and down by 396.9 million litres (-4.5%) when compared with 2022. Domestic Milk Intake increased substantially from September to December 2024 (+14.5%) when compared with the same months in 2023 whereas Domestic Milk Intake in the first eight months of 2024 was lower than in January to August 2023 (-4.8%).
Butter production fell marginally from 273,200 tonnes in 2023 to 267,600 tonnes in 2024.
Skim Milk Powder production decreased from 167,200 tonnes in 2023 to 138,800 tonnes in 2024, down 28,300 tonnes (-17%).

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (07 February 2025) published Milk Statistics for December 2024.
Commenting on the release, Stephanie Kelleher, Statistician in the Agriculture Section of the CSO, said: “Today’s figures show that the Domestic Milk Intake in December 2024 by milk processors and co-ops rose by 61.8 million litres, or 30.1%, compared with the same month in 2023. The Domestic Milk Intake for the period January to December 2024 was at 8.43 billion litres, a fall of 0.4% compared with January to December 2023. Skim Milk Powder production increased by 1,900 tonnes when compared with December 2023."
