Numbers Employed

Using standard International Labour Organisation (ILO) criteria, an estimated 2,704,200 persons were in employment in Q1 2024, up 1.9% (51,500) from 2,652,700 in Q1 2023.

The increase of 51,500 (+1.9%) in employment is composed of increases of 21,600 (+1.5%) for males and 29,900 (+2.4%) for females in the year to Q1 2024. See Table 2.1

Employment Rates

The employment rate for those aged 15-64 was 73.8% in Q1 2024 compared to 73.7% in Q1 2023 and 72.9% in Q1 2022. In Q1 2024, the employment rate for males aged 15-64 years was 78.0%, compared to 69.8% for females.

Looking at the rates by age group, the employment rate was lowest among those aged 15-19 years (26.3%) and highest among those aged 35-44 years (83.9%). The rate of youth employment, those aged 15-24, stood at 47.0%; slightly higher for males (47.1%) than for females (46.9%). See Tables 2.1 and 2.2.

Economic Sector

The economic sectors that saw the largest year-on-year growth in Q1 2024 were the:

  • Professional, Scientific & Technical activities, which increased by 26,300 or 15.4%.
  • Education, which increased by 16,900 or 7.9%
  • Agriculture, Forestry & Fishing, which increased by 6,500 or 6.4%

The largest decreases by economic sector in Q1 2024 were observed in the:

  • The Industry sector – down 11,200 persons or -3.4%.
  • Administrative & Support Service sector, which decreased by 3,000 or -2.6%
  • Wholesale & Retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles sector – down 5,400 or-1.6%

Employment Status

The number of employees increased by 52,500 (+2.3%) in the year to Q1 2024 to 2,337,400, while the number of self-employed increased by 3,400 (+1.0%) to 344,700.

The increase in overall employment of 51,500 in the year to Q1 2024 was made up of 48,900 (+2.3%) persons in full-time employment and 2,600 (+0.5%) persons in part-time employment. See Tables 2.1 and 2.4.

NUTS 3 Regions

Decreases were observed in two NUTS 3 regions. The Midland region saw the largest percentage decrease at -1.1%, followed by the Border region at -0.9%. The Mid-West region saw the largest percentage increase at 3.6%, followed by the West region at 3.2%. See Table 2.5.
