LFS estimates were updated on 22nd Feb 2024 to incorporate updated population estimates for the period 2016 Q3 to 2023 Q3, based on the results of Census 2022. LFS results are updated in this way following each Census of Population. For further information see Background Notes.

Numbers Employed

Using standard International Labour Organisation (ILO) criteria, an estimated 2,608,500 persons were in employment in Q1 2023, up 4.1% (102,700) from 2,505,800 in Q1 2022.

The increase of 102,700 (+4.1%) in employment is composed of increases of 53,700 (+4.0%) for males and 49,000 (+4.2%) for females in the year to Q1 2023. See Table 2.1.

Employment Rates

The employment rate for those aged 15-64 was 73.6% in Q1 2023 compared to 72.8% in Q1 2022 and 65.6% in Q1 2021. In Q1 2023, the employment rate for males aged 15-64 years was 78.1%, compared to 69.2% for females.

Looking at the rates by age group, the employment rate was lowest among those aged 15-19 years (26.8%) and highest among those aged 35-44 years (84.6%). The rate of youth employment, those aged 15-24, stood at 47.2%; slightly higher for males (47.4%) than for females (47.0%). See Tables 2.1 and 2.2.

Economic Sector

The economic sectors that saw the largest % year-on-year growth in Q1 2023 were the:

  • Administrative & Support Service Activities sector which increased by 10,700 or 10.5% in the year to Q1 2023
  • Wholesale & Retail Trade; Repair of Motor Vehicles & Motorcycles sector, which increased by 29,500 or 9.8%
  • Other NACE activities sector increased by 10,600 or 9.7% in the year to Q1 2023

The largest % decreases in the number of persons in employment in the year to Q1 2023 were in the:

  • Agriculture, Forestry & Fishing sector, which decreased by 4,400 or -4.3%
  • Transportation & Storage sector – down 2,600 or -2.3%
  • Financial, Insurance & Real Estate activities, which fell by 2,800 or -2.1%

Employment Status

The number of employees increased by 91,200 (+4.2%) in the year to Q1 2023 to 2,249,200, while the number of self-employed increased by 7,800 (+2.4%) to 333,200.

The increase in overall employment of 102,700 in the year to Q1 2023 was made up of 73,800 (+3.7%) persons in full-time employment and 28,900 (+5.4%) persons in part-time employment. See Tables 2.1 and 2.4.

NUTS 3 Regions

Employment increased over the year in all NUTS 3 regions. The South-East region saw the largest percentage increase at 6.3%, followed by the Border region at 6.1%. See Table 2.5.
