Some 763,600 foreign visitors completed a trip to Ireland in August 2024, an increase of 3.5% compared with August 2023.
The largest contingent of visitors (35.7%) came from Great Britain, followed by the United States (18.8%), and then Germany and France both at (7.4%).
The visitors stayed a total of 6.7 million nights in the country, a decrease of 9.2% when compared with August 2023.
The visitors' most frequent reason (48.8%) for travelling to Ireland was for holiday or leisure.
The visitors spent €1.1 billion in total on their trips, up 10.2% when compared with August 2023.
The average length of stay for foreign resident overnight visitors was 8.7 nights, down from an average of 9.9 nights in August 2023.

Foreign visitors in the context of this release refers to overseas residents who have stayed at least one night in Ireland. These overseas residents include both Irish and non-Irish nationals but specifically exclude residents of Northern Ireland.
Foreign visitors who depart Ireland via the airports and seaports of Northern Ireland are not captured in the survey.
Some 763,600 foreign residents completed their visits to Ireland in August 2024, an increase of 3.5% compared with August 2023. These visitors had spent 6.7 million nights in Ireland, a decrease of 9.2% compared with the same month in 2023. The visitors’ average length of stay was 8.7 nights, down 1.2 nights from August 2023. The visitors expended €1,097.6 million on their trips, an increase of 10.2% compared with August 2023. The average cost of their trips in August 2024 was €1,437, whereas their average cost 12 months previously was €1,351.

In total, 2,308,000 passengers departed Ireland on overseas routes in August 2024, an increase of 5.2% compared with August 2023. The majority of departing passengers (56.9%) were Irish residents heading outbound for tourism or other purposes. A further 9.9% were same day visitors, comprising Northern Ireland residents heading outbound via an airport or seaport in the Republic of Ireland (4.0%), foreign resident transfer passengers (4.8%), or other foreign resident same day visitors (1.1%). Some 33.1% of the departing passengers were foreign resident overnight visitors, constituting 763,600 visitors in total. The remainder of this release focuses exclusively on the characteristics and activities of these foreign resident overnight visitors (referred to simply as foreign visitors).
Of the 763,600 foreign visitors who departed Ireland on overseas routes in August 2024, the highest proportion (35.7%) was from Great Britain, accounting for 272,500 of the visitors in total. The second highest proportion (18.8%) was from the United States, accounting for 143,800 visitors. The third highest proportion (7.4%) came from Germany comprising a further 56,500 visitors. By way of comparison, in August 2023 there were 259,900 visitors from Great Britain, 142,600 from the United States, 57,700 from France and 47,900 from Germany.
Foreign visitors who departed Ireland on overseas routes in August 2024 spent a total of 6,666,200 nights in the country. Broken down by residency, Other Europe visitors spent more nights in the country than any other residency group, accounting for 2,645,600 (39.7%) of the nights. The next most important visitor group, in terms of nights spent, was Great Britain, making up 1,796,700 (27.0%) of the total nights. Visitors from the United States of America and Canada were third most important, accounting for a further 1,514,400 (22.7%) of the nights. Other visitors made up 709,600 (10.6%) of the nights. Compared with August 2023, the total visitor nights in the country decreased by 9.2%. The average length of stay also fell, from 9.9 nights in August 2023 to 8.7 nights in August 2024.
Among the 763,600 foreign visitors departing Ireland on overseas routes in August 2024, more had come to holiday than for any other reason. Some 372,800 (48.8%) had holiday or leisure as the main reason for their trip. The next most likely reason was to visit family or friends, with 246,900 (32.3%) of the visitors coming for this purpose. A further 75,500 (9.9%) of the visitors had come for business or work-related reasons. Compared with August 2023, visitors for holiday or leisure increased by 7.1% whilst those visiting family or friends and visiting for business or work decreased by 0.9% and 7.7% respectively.
Among the 763,600 foreign visitors who departed Ireland on overseas routes in August 2024, some 298,600 (39.1%) stayed in a hotel. Another 290,900 (38.1%) of the visitors had used family/friend or their own property as their main accommodation type. A further 62,900 (8.2%) of the visitors used guest house/bed & breakfast as their main accommodation type, while 43,300 (5.7%) of the foreign visitors used rented/self-catering as their main accommodation type. By way of comparison, in August 2023 some 297,000 visitors stayed in a hotel, 295,900 stayed in their own property or the property of family or friends, 45,700 used guest house/bed & breakfast, and 36,600 stayed in rented/self-catering accommodation types.
Foreign visitors to Ireland who departed Ireland on overseas routes in August 2024 spent a total of €1,097.6 million on their trips (an increase of 10.2% compared with August 2023).
Broken down by expense category, the costliest subheading was day-to-day spending (incidental expenditures incurred during their visit such as eating out, entrance fees, public transport, etc, but excluding accommodation), amounting to €432.5 million (39.4% of the total expenditure). The next costliest subheading was accommodation at €333.8 million (30.4% of the total). Fares cost a further €277.5 million (25.3% of the total). Lastly, prepayments (items paid in advance, such as car hire, pre-booked tickets, etc.) comprised just €53.8 million (4.9% of the total).
Overall, in August 2024 the typical foreign visitor spent €1,437 on their trip to Ireland, breaking down as €363 on their fare, €70 on prepayments, €437 on accommodation, and €566 on day-to-day expenses. In August 2023 the comparable mean expenditure on these items was €356, €62, €428, and €505 respectively.

Commenting on the release, Gregg Patrick, Statistician in the Tourism and Travel Division, said:
“The results show that 763,600 foreign visitors departed Ireland on overseas routes in August 2024, an increase of 3.5% compared with August 2023.
Some 35.7% of the visitors were from Great Britain, 18.8% were from the United States, and 7.4% were from both Germany and France.
Typically, their visit lasted 8.7 nights and the total spent on their trips was up 10.2% to €1,097.6 million in August 2024 when compared with the same month in 2023.
Their most frequent reason for their journey (48.8%) was for holiday or leisure purposes.
More of the visitors stayed in hotels (39.1%) than in any other accommodation type, and the typical cost of their visit was €1,437, which comprised €363 on fares, €70 on prepayments, €437 on accommodation, and €566 on day-to-day expenditure.”
