Current account with the UK shows a deficit of €1bn in Quarter 2 2022

Current account with UK (See Table 3.1)

  • Merchandise exports were €8,096m in the second quarter of 2022, an increase of €1,952m compared with the second quarter of 2021.
  • Merchandise imports were €9,327m in the second quarter of 2022, an increase of €2,513m compared with the same period in 2021.
  • Services exports at €11,197m increased by €1,394m compared to the second quarter of 2021, mainly due to transport and computer exports.
  • Services imports at €6,131m were up €423m over that same period in 2021, these figures were affected by increased levels of business and tourism and travel costs.
  • Investment income earned in the UK at €6,269m, increased by €725m compared with one year earlier and investment income payable to UK investors at €11,184m increased by €1,671m.
  • When these effects are combined, the trade balance with the UK has increased by €411m and net income outflows have increased by €954m, compared with the second quarter of 2021. The result is a current account balance of -€1,046m in the second quarter of 2022, compared to -€504m over the same period in 2021.

The experimental table on foreign direct investment with the UK (See Table 3.2); shows that direct investment in Ireland from the the UK has decreased by €2,197m in the second quarter of 2022 mainly due to decreases in other capital and equity. Direct investment abroad from Ireland to the UK has increased by €1,081m in the second quarter of 2022.
