Balance of International Payments
The Balance of Payments current account, a measure of Ireland’s economic flows with the rest of the world, showed a surplus of €14.9bn in the first quarter of 2024 up €3.1bn on the Q12023 surplus of €11.8bn due to an increased services and income balance.

- Merchandise exports were €75,526m in the first quarter of 2024, a decrease of €13,435m compared with the first quarter of 2023. Merchandise imports were €36,711m in the first quarter of 2024, an increase of €1,514m over the same period in 2023.
- Service exports at €105,053m increased by €14,673m compared to the first quarter of 2023, mainly due to higher computer services exports (which increased by €10,473m).
- Service imports at €95,759m were up €6,431m over the same period in 2023, mainly due to increased business, computer and financial service imports.
- Ireland’s trade balance at €48,108m, all goods and services exports less all goods and services imports fell by €6,708m in the first quarter of 2024 over the same period in 2023.
- Investment income earned abroad at €65,495m, increased by €10,265m compared with one year earlier while investment income payable to foreign investors at €97,547m increased by €486m. The overall income balance for the quarter at -€33,217m increased by €9,794m compared with the same period in 2023.

- Direct investment in Ireland decreased by €1,218m in the first quarter of 2024. This was due to a decrease in equity of €15,098m which was offset by increased reinvestment of earnings and other capital investment of €7,019m and €6,862m. Direct investment abroad increased by €12,993m in the quarter, mainly due to increased reinvestment of earnings investment.
- Portfolio investment in foreign assets increased by €56,581m in the quarter mainly due to increased investment in foreign debt instruments of €40,850m. Portfolio investment in Ireland increased by €23,176m due to an increase in equity investment of €32,148m which was partially offset by a reduction in debt instruments of €8,971m.
- Other investment assets grew by €4,903m while other investment liabilities grew by €41,644m in the first quarter of 2024.
