Households spent €46 million on their most recent visit to nature areas

Some of the main findings from the survey are:

  • Three-quarters of urban households visit urban green spaces most weeks for recreational purposes
  • 60% of households travelled by private motor vehicles on their most recent visit to nature areas
  • Walking was the most popular activity with 78% of households going for a walk during their most recent visit

Figure 1 shows how often households visit different types of nature areas. Tables 1A-1G provide a full breakdown of the responses by household characteristics.

Urban green spaces were the most popular type of green and natural space visited by Irish households in Quarter 3 of 2021, with 32% of households visiting most days and a further 34% visiting most weeks. The figure was higher for urban households with 74% visiting most weeks. Fields, farms and countryside, and woodland or forest areas were each visited by 31% of households most weeks.

Figure 2 shows that urban green spaces such as parks and playgrounds were most likely to have been visited most recently by households (31%), followed by the beach, other coastline or sea at 26%. Table 2 shows a breakdown of the most recent household visit to nature areas by household characteristics. While 40% of urban households compared with 10% of rural households reported their most recent visit was to an urban green space, 29% of rural households made their most recent visit to fields, farms or countryside compared with 6% of urban households.

Table 3 in this release shows the number of persons on the most recent visit by households to nature areas, including numbers of children, while Table 4 shows that 60% of households travelled by private motor vehicle on their most recent visit and 35% travelled on foot, bicycle or wheelchair. Table 5 and Figure 3 show the distance travelled by households on their most recent visit to nature areas. Figure 3 shows that 25% of rural households and 22% of urban households travelled one kilometre or less, while 10% of rural households and 13% of urban households travelled over 50 kilometres.

Walking was the most popular activity on households' most recent visit to nature areas with 78% of households reporting that they went walking on their most recent trip. The second most popular activity was appreciating scenery which was reported by 43% of households. Picnicking or eating and drinking out was the third most popular activity and was undertaken by 28% of households, while 23% reported playing with children.

Figure 5 shows expenditure by households on their most recent visit to nature areas. Total expenditure by households was €45.9 million, of which €22.3 million was spent on food and drink and €12.3 million on motor fuel.
